a) How would you costume Désirée to show both member of peasants and different outsider/special/dreamer?
b) costume--> connections with other characters Gods? Rich? Mama E.?
To show Désirée in her fullness on stage, I would have her in common robes that I picture the people of her village wearing. These cloth robes would be homemade from simple material, and they would act as a symbol of poverty. However, I would give Désirée an elegant pair of shoes that her mother needed to save up for a long time in order to buy them for her. This would counteract act her status as just a normal peasant. On stage the shoes would be noticeable, maybe a bright or exotic color. Many villagers would always bring them up when talking to Désirée. The shoes would symbolize her desires to leave/walk away from her current status as someone who is poor, and try to make something greater out of her life. The shoes would be enough to separate herself from the common villager, but would be not nearly enough to elevate her into the rich social class. She would be in a buffer state not really accepted by anyone expect for Mama E, and the Gods. The peasants would think that she is too good for them, and the rich would look down at her. This would be the main obstacle in her life until she is able to find herself, and either find nice clothing to go along with the shoes or stop wearing the shoes entirely. Until one of these two things happen, she will never truly be accepted by either social class.
