"Propless" Review

Friday night after winning coveted pillar cup as a member of team Responsibilty, and Spring Fling I decided to attend The Cheshire Academy improv acting show "Propless" directed by senior Sam Weed. The show was entirely improvisation where the actors played theater games in front of a live audience. Once Sam told us that they were going to play theater games I was immediately reminded of Viola Spolin, the mother of theater games. One thing I thought it was very interesting there were props used in "Propless" but the actors weren't allowed to use them as the objects they really were. For example, the box used as a prop had written on it "not a box." Sam Weed did a good job of cutting the scenes at the right time. She let all the actors do what they wanted on stage but when the act started to get a little repetitive or boring she knew exactly when to move on to another scene. I also thought it was interesting how Sam Weed was the director of the show b...

Projection, Enunciation-making sure your voice is heard on stage. The audience should hear the voice clearly. It is important because the audience need to hear what the actors are saying in order to understand them. If people doesn’t project on stage, their performance will turn into a Mime performance. It will be confusing to 4. Blocking is the actions and movements actors do on the stage. Having good blocking is crucial to making your performance looking as natural as possible, and to show the message you are trying to portray on stage. It helps the audience to understand the context and we could fully use the space of the stage. Prior to modern acting and “realistic” blocking, blocking was set up as “ tableau” This was used in classical theater  to emphasize the unrealisticness of the play being shown. T...

5-8 Revision Blog post TGM

After looking over my partner's and Ms. Guarino's remarks for my paper, I found common suggestions that I should try to restructure my paper through more of the perception of Jim instead of Laura. This is by far the biggest correction I will have to make in my paper. Many times while  writing my paper, I questioned myself the same thing. Often times I felt as if I was writing from Laura's perspective instead of Jim's. I think this stemmed from my strong knowledge of Laura's character, and my lesser knowledge of Jim. I think it was hard for me to write in Jim's perspective because we were introduced to him late in the play. Also throughout the play there is not a lot of background information on Jim. Jim is made out to be the man that Laura had a crush on in high school, and is supposed to be very successful according to her. We learn a little more about Jim throughout the play, but we don't know as much about him as we do about Laura. One other improvem...

In class writing 5-7

Something that made each poetry recital unique is the performance and interpretations each actor had for their poems. Poetry is very adaptive and can be recited in many ways. For example, Leslie and Nan’s performances really stood out to me becuase they chose to sing verses of their poems. The music they chose had no relation to the original poem, but they made it flow as if the poem was perfect for the song. Their performances turned out great, and were by far my favorites of the class! Jack’s recital and performance I felt was kind of dry. He displayed very little movement on stage, and he was very hard to hear. Both of these things effective his overall performance negatively. On the bright side, I felt that Jack did a great job of picking his wardrobe, and was by far the most flashy dressed actor of the group.  When it comes to my performance I felt I could of been a little more engaging to the audience by adding music/sound since it seemed as if this was a constant strategy u...
