Children By The Sea
It is a travel story
Setup:
2 Narrators- Male (Unnamed), Female (unnamed) are writing letters but not to themselves. They are star crossed lovers that will never see each other. Only the audience can see
Characters:
Male- (Unnamed) other protagonist on the boat, He writes poetically, formal, public
Female- (Unnamed) protagonist in Haiti, no capitalization, personal, shorter sentences (maybe less time, in a hurry) At the end she and her family moves into the countryside away from all the chaos
Konpè- guy on the boat
Madan Roger
Célianne- pregnant women who gave birth on a sinking raft. She was rapped by solider and gives birth, then kills herself by jumping in the water once her baby dies
Captain- tells the people they need to throw valuables overboard to survive
Papa- Hard father but loving of his children and daughter

Agwe- spirit of the water
Swiss- the baby born of the sinking raft, her lifeless body was thrown overboard by her mother
Lionel- Part of the rebellion, and Célianne's brother who was impriosned for being told to get intimate with his mother

Hope to escape Haiti
The Haitian people faced hatred and violence from their oppressive government. Girls were rapped by soldiers, and families were forced to "get imitate" with close relatives.
The people on the boat decided to leave Haiti in effort to reach Miami. Their raft did not hold up and they may have drowned (although this part is up for interoperation)
"The Children of the Sea" refers to Célianne (15) and her dead child. Célianne commits suicide after giving birth the stillborn baby and throwing the baby overboard after the other people of the ship told her to, to lose the excess weight
Célianne's identify was killed long before she was on the boat. She sacred her face so no one would recognize her.
The protagonist is writing about all the chaos as it is unfolding in front of his eyes.
There were extreme efforts to keep the sinking boat afloat and the people became desperate

Little Guy is given lines to recite in a play. Boukman is the character Little Guy is playing who is the leader of the rebellion. It is a significant part
Lili and Guy disagree on what Little Guy's future should be
Lili= wants him to stay in school
Guy= wants to put him of the list so he has works when he is older. however, Guy gives up on arguing his cause
Guy is depressed throughout the story, He sees himself as a lack of a provider since he does not have a stable job. It is never enough for Guy
Guy has a obsession with the Sugar mill owner's Hot Air Balloon. He wants to ride in it
Little Guy is given more lines the same day Guy gets work. Lili puts all her faith into Little Guy
She is no longer seeing eye to eye with her husband
One day Guy takes the hot air balloon and people admire how he is flying it by himself.
It is the high point of his life, but I don't not think this was his intention
He commits suicide by jumping out. He lands not far from Little Guy and Lili
Little Guy griefs for his father and sees it as a honorable act in the moment. She recites his lines.
*Guy's suicide may have been decided prior because we see him and Lili always talking about the hot air balloon and Lili fears that Guy will one day hurt himself.
Night Women
Characters:
Mother- 25 years old
Son- young child
Emmanuel- Married man who has sex with the boy's mother on Tuesday and Saturday
Alexandre- man who has sex with the boy's mother on Monday and Thursday
Mother needs to provide for the family since the father has died or left. She works in the day (labor job) and night (prostitution)
She hated working during the night
Mother watches the boy sleep every night. She whispers stories about the Mountains, ghost women, deadly snakes at one side of the rainbow and a pot of gold on the other into his ear as he drifts off.
Mother is the main provider for this family
*Mother and the son could be Lili and Guy since each character is never named. This could be a story written later in their lives once Guy is dead and no longer providing

Their is a emotional journey and understanding of the past for Josephine once her mother is gone

Hopelessness -- hope at the end of the story since the tradition is passed down to Josephine

Connection- endless mountains symbolize hurdles for the people to overcome and they will never end

She is slowly losing hope throughout the story
Each viist see says less words to her daughter and one of the last visits she does not even ask for the Madonna
They talk about the massacre on the river. How Manman was pregnant and came out of the massacre alive. She came out of the river with blood drops on her that looked liked wings of fire. this symbolized the start of her journey
