Danticat's style writing 

  • Varied style/ tone to represent various voices (different perspectives) 
  • Realistic (violence) vs. fantastical writing (images of beauty)
  • She creates a contrast (themes: hope vs. hopelessness)
  • Unnamed  characters- everyday voices, representing a group as a whole) 
  • Uses different styles to portray different characteristics of narrators/characters
  • Ambiguity-not concrete, more open to interoperation
  • Danticat puts holes in the book purposely to interact with the reader



Night Women:

Two Worlds:
1. Night- very plain, and dead writing, (Traditional prose)
2. Mother- uses symbols, imagery, vivid, emotional (Poetry)

2 types of work
Day work- piece work (sewing)
Night work- prosituite
