4-19 In class (Home) peer Poem project
During class time Tuesday all students were split into groups and asked to perform "Seize the Day." Our group consisted of me, Joey, Nia, and Leslie. We performed the poem by having two characters live out their daily life entirely different from the other. Both characters were assigned to their side of the stage and did not cross over until money became an object in the play. We showed the side of a privileged person and a poor person, but both had the same morals and concept of money. Both did not take the coin for themselves because they were strictly driven by their ethnic background and let that be the defining factor of their personality. This interpretation shows the purity of both characters and the strong connection to their family roots and ancestors.
Nan's group took a different approach and interpreted the play and put a musical twist on it. I really thought it flowed nice however it was very hard to hear. I got the sense that they took the poem and interpreted to a more modern sense how people forget who they are and where they come from. I think that was the reason for Nan to keep repeating "remember" The only thing that this group needed to do better was speak louder, and maybe giving Purdy and Ivan some more motion compared to them just sitting down. Nan also sounded awesome while singing.
David's group went last and experienced some flaws in their production. There initial ideas and movements were good, but nothing seemed to be going right for this group this time around. I think it was just a stroke of bad luck. Ads made an unwelcome appearance while the music was playing, and Jasmine seemed to have trouble keeping herself from laughing during the entire scene. At the very end of the performance the bed spring gave out underneath David when he sat on the bed. This poem interpretation definitely needs some revisions in order to meet up to the other groups.
Jacob Lebo's group started out by reciting the poem in unison. I thought this a nice touch, but could've been more in sync. The walking around the bridge over, and over again had me confused. My interpretation of this was that they were trying to show the earth revolving around the sun symbolizing the everlasting circle of life. Their movements were all the same but on a couple occasions they passed or got very close to one another. I am not sure if this was intentional but this stood out to me. I think this group would definitely need to work on there movements and being more in sync if they were trying to mimic the everlasting cycle of life. The music choice also did not seem to be going with the mood of the performance since it seemed very upbeat and happy. However, if this is what this group was aiming for, they achieved it because their entire performance seemed a bit rushed and only lasted about a minute.
Cassidy’s Group was took lines from the original poem, and each performer made an individual poem. I thought this was clever and unique from everyone else group. I really appreciated the creativity this group tackled this project with. However, the group had very little movement and they didn’t memorize anything. It seemed almost robotic to me. I liked how it was broken down into 3 separate pieces. This gave there performance a different tone while each person was performing. I also liked the uses of a different language that’s Cassidy added to the end of her section of the performance.
When watching Yun’s group perform I felt at peace. I liked how Yun was the only performer in the opening scene. This was different from most groups. I liked the transition of lines from each performer. The entire performance seemed very relaxed to me. I liked how each performer stood at the top of the bridge when saying their lines. This showed that each performer was equally important to the other. The music choice also fit the mood well. One thing I did not understand at the end of this performance was why two of the performers were standing under the bridge while one was on top.
