On Tuesday in class Jasmine and I performed the final version of our scene. The scene we chose was from The Glass Menagerie. The highlight of the scene is when Jim and Laura dance, and embrace. The production of our scene turned out to be really good. There were very little stumbles with lines, and dialogue came out smooth. Both Jasmine and I looked good on camera. Ms. Guarino completemented us on our blocking. It consistsed lots of simple movements true to the scene. The use of the bridge turned out to be crucial for our scene development. We were able to show authority of Jim over Laura from the levels of the bridge. The end of the scene may of been the most dramatic, and critical for emotional development. Jasmine did a great job of showing sadness, and I was able to show remorse.
The scene started off completely dark. Our dialogue started once the lights focused on center stage. From watching the video taken from my iPad, the lights made our faces a little distraught. This could’ve been fixed by using a better camera or taking better preperactions when it came to filming. When the scene progressed, the lights shifted from center stage to center back where the tableware positioned. The table held Laura’s glass menagerie set. This turned out to be a nice touch especially when I held up the glass unicorn, and the lights focused on it. Lights then focused to the bridge where we had our dance. After the glass unicorn dropped and our dance concluded, the stage lights reverted to stage until the end of the play.
Things I should work on is the emotion I use in the opening scene. It seems a little dry to me. Especially the part when I go on about how Laura needs to expand her horizon. An example of my line where I feel I need more emotion when when I say “You need to think of yourself as superior” This should be a very upbeat part of the scene, instead it seemed lifeless in my opinion as the actor. It was very hard to hear Jasmine and I on the iPad. Either we need to speak louder or get a new camera, but audio definitely needs to be improved. I noticed that I tend to sway during the scene. This makes me appear unnatural on camera. The only way I can figure to fix this problem is by practing being on stage more.
Memorization of lines proved not to be a huge issue. I know Jasmine and I both put in a look of work to know our lines. We were able to shoot the scene in one take without a hiccup! Jasmine and I adjusted to one another if one messed up slightly. This showed great collaboration, and it also showed that we had great understanding of one another’s lines. I could tell Jasmine was a little nervous throughout, but she was able to overcome it. She did a wonderful job portraying emotions that Laura showed in the real play. There is a lot to build on, but overall both Jamsine and I did an adequate job.
