Blog Post 2/5
After performing our scene in front of the class and going through the memorization quiz, there are still some things I feel Jasmine and I need to work on to perfect our scene. During the quiz, I realized I may have the most lines out of everyone in the class :| but I feel up to the challenge! A lot of the feedback indicated that our staging and blocking needs to be improved. There were many times where our scene seemed to rushed, especially the parts where I am supposed to walk around, and ultimately get closer to Laura. Jim is always moving around in the dance scene, so I need to do a better job of not standing in single spot for too long.
Our props need to be improved. We need to have a candle. The candle was an important symbol in the play, and it adds to scenes mood. Jasmine and I should also find a plastic horse figurine instead of a mouse haha! I also feel if we could find a couch that could add to the scene. We wouldn't sit on it because in the play, Jim opts to sit on the floor by the candle. I believe he does this to show his informality to try and make Laura more comfortable.
Emotion throughout the scene will fluctuate for both characters. As Jim, I need to be very energetic and understanding at the same time. In the beginning of the scene, I need to show care for Laura in order to break her out of her shyness. Once I do this, I need to show sings of affection towards her. This needs to make Laura think I really like her. At the end of the scene, I am going to need to explain myself in a manor that everything I did for Laura previously wasn't really how I felt, but I only did it to help Laura overcome her shyness. Jasmine as Laura, is going to need to be shy in the opening part, then develop a love for me, and at the end she is going to need to show disappointment that we can never be together. This sporadic change of emotion will by far be the most difficult part for Jasmine and I to sell this scene as convincing.
