1-12 Proposal for Project

The scene Jasmine and I chose to perform is the dance scene between Jim, and Laura. It took place after dinner when the power went out in the house. This scene is important because it is where Laura breaks through her shyness, and starts to open up. While dancing Jim breaks the glass unicorn. But Laura doesn't seem to care. In this moment I believe Laura started falling for Jim. But once Laura finds out that Jim is engaged, she reverts quickly. This is the climax of the play.

In the scene I will be playing Jim. Jasmine will be playing Laura. I feel this scene can be a fun challenge for both of us. In the past, I’ve struggled with serious scenes.  I feel the reason why is because I like being funny, and I am more comfortable in comedic scenes. But I feel I can overcome this challenge. I have never worked with Jasmine before in a major project, but I can tell she is a skilled actress who takes her work very seriously. This will allow us to put our own interpretation into performing the play.

Our scene will start on page 59 in The Glass Menagrie play script.  Our opening line will be “So what have you been doing since high school?” Asked by Jim. The play will likely start with Laura having her back turned to Jim looking at the audience. She will then turn to come closer to Jim who is sitting down. During the scene Laura will start to fall for Jim. But at the end she will be sad, and heartbroken. For staging, I was thinking about having a single prop candle. This is where majority of the scene will take place. There will also be a single table with some type of figurine on it. This is to symbolize the glass figurine in the play. When we dance I will knock the figurine down. The scene will then carry through page 64, and end with Laura giving Jim the figurine to keep for something to remember her by.

The literary analysis we are hoping to explore is how Laura has changed throughout the scene by Jim’s actions. Laura falls in love with Jim when they dance, but this is short lived. Laura eventually gets her heart broken by Jim. This after, he told her they could never be together. I am going to try to make it seem as if Jim shows genuine care, and affection for Laura.  I need to be able to portray that Jim hopes to change Laura’s life at first. At the end of the scene, I need to make him seem heartless and unsympathetic towards Laura. Jim should believes he did nothing wrong. The dance scene is one of the most important in the play. It shows that Laura has the inability to move on with her life after this scene. This scene should leave the audience thinking that this was Laura's one and only opportunity to fall in love, and have a family of her own.
