My Adaptation of R&J Blog
My modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet is about a wealthy white male from Chicago who falls madly in love with a African American girl. He has been dating her for about 3 months. Her parents and family know she has been dating a guy for a while, but does not know he is white. He goes from the comfort of his house to the Southside of Chicago to meet the girls family for the first time. The girl lives in one of the worst neighborhoods in the city. He has never been there and does not know what he is walking into. The girl is both excited and nervous because she does not know how her parents will react to him being white. The parents are shocked. They cannot believe their eyes, and act very hostile against her boyfriend, and disapprove of the relationship going any further. The man exits the house in tears. He genuinely loved this girl. While walking back to his car he is spotted by a gang. The gang comes up to him and starts questioning why he is in their neighborhood. They open fires on him. The girl comes running out of her house once she hears the shots fired. The man who killed the girls boyfriend is actually the her cousin. This makes her extremely upset to see her boyfriend dead on the sidewalk. She confronts her cousin angrily, and reaches for his gun to kill him. In the heat of the moment one of the gang members shoots the girl once she gains control of her cousins gun. She dies next to her boyfriend on the sidewalk.
The idea of this adaptation came to me because I knew someone who dated a African American girl. They went out 2 or 3 times before she told her parents about the,. I remember him telling me that she called him one night saying she couldn't see him anymore because her parents were not on board with her dating a white guy at the time. He thought this was unfair, by respected the decision her parents made. I think this adaptation is good because it relates to present day racism. Maybe not as much as in the past but there are still racism out in this world. This adaptation could appeal to both younger and older generations. I would have a Romeo, Juliet, Lord Capulet, and Tybalt figure in my play. I would not take one particular scene from the play but I would follow the theme of conflict. There would be a constant obstacle blocking the two from sharing their love. There different races would be the main conflict My adaptation would bring awareness to how racism is a two way street and can be expressed on anyone. The tone would be dramatic and the scene would show true feeling and emotion. Staging would be to be a street setting and a houses interior. The blackbox could be a viable option for all of my scenes. I feel my adaptation idea could be understood by a very wide audience.
