Amanda is extremely irritating. She is constantly on both of her children's cases, especially Tom. Amanda on multiple occasions says to Tom, "You smoke to much." This quotes shows Amanda’s persistence. She cannot except the fact that her kids have there flaws. Amanda knows both her children are flawed, but the way she picks on Tom makes him more uncomfortable with his situation as the provider of the family. Amanda could be still hopeful that her husband will return to her, and the family. Although it seems that Amanda takes her anger out on Tom. She also stated that Tom reminds her so much of her husband. Amanda also nags and pushes Laura to find a gentlemen caller. She wants to marry her off so when Laura gets married, her husband would take Amanda into their houses. Amanda is a big reason for the families disfunction, and it all stems from her being a pest towards her two children.
Tom's character seems to be held captive by his own surroundings. He is grounded, and never able to achieve his dreams of adventure. Tom is trapped to provide for his needy mother and sister. Tom's only release of the tension he feels is by getting out of the house. He says he goes to go to the movies. In one quote we see Tom having a burst out at his mother, when questioning him where he goes every night. "Mother, I've joined the Hogan gang. I'm a hired assassin, I carry a Tommy-gun in a violin case! I run a string of cathouses in the valley! They call me Killer, Killer, Wingfield, I'm really leading a double life." Its as if Tom is a ticking time bomb, and it is only a matter of time until he bursts again. He apologized once to his mother, but I feel there will be no turning back once he feels trapped again.
"I'm crippled!" Laura is extremely insecure about her physical disability. She had pleurosis, and it left her with a noticeable limp. Her mother tries to reassure her this is not the case, but Laura has felt this way since high school, and her own mind magnifies the limp. Her condition feeds her introverted mentality. Laura's personality flaws come form the fact that she had been sheltered by her compulsive mother, and is never exposed to anything in the outside world. Her Glass Menagerie is the one thing that keeps her busy.
