Blog 7 10 Characters and Items
In class today we composed a list of the 10 most important characters in Romeo and Juliet. Without these characters, and objects they posses the play would miss key symbols, and scenes. Romeo would have a cheap ring to present to Juliet. It would be no where near as glamorous as the ring Paris would have, but ultimately Juliet would choose Romeo, and his ring because of the genuine love for one another. Juliet would carry with her a knife to show her inevitable death at the end of the play, due to Romeo and Juliet never being able to be together. This knife symbolizes the end of their love, and the start of the peacemaking between the Montague's and Capulets. Friar Lawerence would have a Rubik's cube, because it symbolizes his identity. He can be unclear and decisive. He tells Romeo to have patcients one minute, and then tells him to go comfort Juliet the next. Many times in the play Friar contradicts himself, and shows many "faces". Tybalt would have a gun. This shows his violent and aggressive behavior throughout the play. Mercutio would have a sword because of him provoking Tybalt to fight him when Romeo refused. Mercutio would die at the hands of Tybalt's gun, because he brought a knife to a gun fight making it no where near an equal fight. Lord Capulet acts as a gate throughout this entire play. Everything that Juliet is supposed to do, goes through his approval. If he disapproves he has the power to block her off. He is one of the main obstacles for Romeo and Juliet to share their love. They are constantly hiding their love form both of their Parents, and Juliet can never muster up the courage to tell her father she is already married. Without the Apothecary in the story the scene where Romeo decided to give up his own life after finding out his love is dead, wouldn't be the same. This is a crucial moment because we had no way of telling if Romeo was all talk about killing himself, UNTIL we bought the poison. And last but not least the Prince would have his crown to show his power over the entire city of Verona. At the end he is the one that establishes the peace from both the Montague house, and Capulet house.
