R & J Act 1 Notes

Shakespeare------> Renaissance-----> Elizabethan England------> Poetic verse

Shakespeare- writes in a poetic way for the queen and other royalty
The play would be spoon fed to the uneducated audience so they to could understand the play
Iambic Pentameter: 5 betas per line, 10 syllables per line
Syllable- the different sounds and parts of a word
                -A{ca}de{my}

Character charts:
Sampson-Capulet's servant
Gregory-Capulet's servant
Prince- Prince of Verona
Romeo- Son of Montague and Lady Montague, falls in love with Juliet who is apart of the family rivals Capulets
Juliet: daughter of Lady Capulet, and Lord Capulet, falls in love with Romeo
Benvolio- Romeo's cousin
Mercutio- is a close friend to Romeo and a blood relative to Prince Escalus and Count Paris.
Rosaline- Romeo's first love who didn't love him back
Tybalt- Juliets cousin
Paris- Juliet's to be husband hand picked by her father

Act 1 Scene 1:
A fight breaks out between the Montague's and Capulet's servants
the Prince of Verona  comes out to break it up, and starts rambling on how he has strict laws on fighting
Romeo's parents have not seen him for a while and ask his cousins if he has seen him
Romeo comes into the scene as his parents leave and he starts to talk to his cousin Benvolio about being in love with a girl and she doesn't love him back
I think scene 1 sets the stage for the rest of the play with conflicts between the Capulet's and Montague's

Act 1 Scene 2:
Lord Capulet is getting prepared to marry Juliet off with the wealthy Paris
Paris is interested in marrying Juliet ASAP
Lord Capulet is not to anxious to do so though he think she is to young and immature
He wants to wait 2 years to do so
Paris is less optimistic and wants to marry now
Lord Capulet wants the two to get to know each other better at the party
Romeo reads the letter that Capulets servant had. It's about the party
Benvolio and Romeo talk about crashing the party
This foreshadows conflict at the party because they are going to crash it

Act 1 Scene 3
Lady Capulet wants to talk to Juliet about Paris and what she thinks of marriage
Juliet says she has not thought much of it yet
Once Juliet hears about Paris she seems anxious and excited to meet him, there is a lot of pressure put on Juliet from her mother and nurse
I get that Juliet is immature and is not ready for marriage and hasn't felt true love yet.

Act 1 Scene 4
Romeo and Benvolio get ready to sneak into the Capulets party by putting masks on
Mercutio and Romeo talk about Love and how Romeo loves Rosline
Romeo also says as this scene ends fate may have something in store for him tonight
-Foreshadowing his tragic love story, and death

Act 1 Scene 5
the party starts
Romeo falls in love with Juliet upon first sight
Tybalt recognizes Romeo and storms away
he kisses her hands and when he finds out she is a Capulet he leaves the party
Juliet tells her nurse about the boy at the party
Nurse asks her what was the boys name, Juliet says Romeo
The nurse says he is a Montague, but Juliet doesn't seem to care
This is interesting because its as if she is disobeying her parents

Staging:
The staging is interesting because it can have people viewing the play from many vantage points
The round stage were people are carrell from the stage are still able to view because how its set up
